Weekend
This is going to have to be a fairly fast post. Last time i was on, the power cut about before i was going to write another blog, so i havent updated on what has been going on for a few days now. One of the more important things is that Michelle and I taught our first class at the Faraja Street Side school.
It felt really good to get the first class done..and pretty successfully as well! We figured out that the kids love games! This school is designed for kids who can not afford uniforms, books etc (tuition is free in Tanzania) Year one students cover 2 years of regular school and year 2 students cover 2 more years of school..so our class ranged in age from about 11-14. Once they complete the two years here, they can go back into the regular school system. We will be teaching these kids about life skills (problem solving, relationships, etc.) and about the body. Most of them can only speak english, so we have a translator for every class. they are one hour classes that happen every monday and friday.
we will be in full swing for programming starting tomorrow.. i cant wait! even though it is a little over whelming.
Yesterday we had quite the adventure. there is a mountain range called the ulurugu mountains that are literally in our back yard. it only costs about $2 to climb. we went with some people from our family who we THOUGHT knew their way.. we later found out that they didnt..we were hoping to reach morningside and we never did lol..but it was still a blast! we stopped at a river with rapids and such and it was the first time i shivered since i was here!!! the climb was literally like walking up a never ending flight of stairs.. most of the path was a foot wide and you could barely see your feet through the thick grass! the guys finally asked someone for directions and we found out that morningside was on the other side of a peak that was pretty far away..so we decided to just go back down and try agian another day haha.. we were in the mountains for about 6 hours (much of it spent swimming). we all slept well that night!
i only have about 5 minutes left, so i will be sure to update again soon. i was able to uploadĀ 5 photos on facebook, so feel free to check that out! there will be more to come next time.
