Going to Zanzibar!
Friday started off really well. Michelle and I had our class with the younger kids in the morning. We were a bit nervous as to how it would run because we had planned for them to make up skits in groups on peer pressure.. this means that was less structured than most classes.. it was a little chaotic while they were preparing, but the skits ended up being awesome and the students were all laughing and had a great time!! I was super happy with the outcome.. after that, we had our weekly meeting with Jessica to talk about how the week went. It was at Ricky’s and since i didnt get cake on my bday, i decided to treat myself to a piece there 🙂 it was delicious!!! Chelsey and Gina saw the craziest thing on their walk there!!! As nuts as the drivers are here, there arent many accidents.. but they say someone on a bike get hit and run over by a car, and it happened about 10m away from them!!!! Then, the driver drove away!! He didnt make it far before he was stopped by people.. they grabbed him outta the car and started beating him!!
Although that sounds horrible, it is kind of nice.. we got told of another story that happened a year or so ago, where there was a shooting in a bar (very rare) All of the women ran one way, while the men ran the other.. They were all running after the shooter to try and get him!! Theft and things like that are very looked down upon here, and is treated extremely seriously!
So the plan was to go to Zanzibar on Saturday morning because we had programming late on Friday (where other volunteers were working, we did orientation with them in toronto and in Dar es Salaam, so we are all friends)…during the meeting though, Makho got a call from the school we were supposed to be going to saying that the presentation would not be able to run later….soooooo, that meant that we could bus to Dar later in the afternoon, stay over, and then catch the 7am ferry to Zanzibar Saturday morning…SWEEEEET!! we were all so happy about that, even though it sucked that the presentation was cancelled..
We had a bit of time to spare, so after the meeting, Jessica took us to a fundi of her’s that she knew would do a good job..we all are getting dresses made, and i cant wait!! It isnt going to be done until Friday, (which is soon now) but that is fine with me if it turns out well!!! After the fundi, we had to race home, pack our bags and head to the bus station..
This trip we did on our own which I really enjoyed.. we had rates of cabs, the bus ticket, and how to get to the ferry once we were in Dar, but the rest was up to us!! We got on the bus fine, and then sat for 3 hours until we got to Dar. The bus ride is always funny.. there are people banging on the side of the bus while you are waiting to leave or any time you stop.. they are selling corn, nuts, juice, water, bread, watches, newspaper, you name it!! I decided to buy something this time, just because its cool haha.. and i was quite hungry!
When we arrived in Dar it was dark, as soon as we got off the bus, we were swarmed with taxi’s..most are reliable here, so we went with the most calm one and then went to the YWCA where we had stayed the last time we were there.. We ended up just playing cards for a bit and then going to sleep.
