Salar de Uyuni
So unfortunatly pictures are not uploading correctly anymore, which means you won’t be seeing any pictures until I get it working again. The salt flats themself were so awesome, my group spent 2.5 hrs taking pictured – if you google sslt flats you will see an example of the type of pictures we were taking. The tour was 3 days and 2 nights and in hindsight I would have been happy with a one or two day tour, as the second and third day were spent viewing volcanoes and lagunas at high altitudes. I got altitude sickness once again so I spent most of my time in the jeep rather than exploring the sights. Thankfully we had a great group and everyone has agreed to share their photos since I didn’t take too many the second or third day.
I think my issue with the altitude is that most travelers I meet started in central america or Ecuador amd worked there way down. All have cities that are at a high elevation, but none as high as Bolivia. I already landed in the highest commercial airport in the world, biked down the worlds most dangerous road, explored the highed salt flats in the world, and I am currently in the highest city in the world. Bolivia seems to have a lot of world records, so I’m hoping that all these high altitude places will make climbing Machu Picchu a breeze!
I also don’t know if I have mentioned how cold it is here because of being in the mountains. The days are warm but the nights get very cold and I have yet to stay in a place with heating. I might have to splurge in the next place I stay!
I am in Potosi now but only staying for a night because of how high it is. The people I am with are doing a tour of a silver mine tomorrow, but I have decided to use my rational thinking finally and am not doing it. Apparently the conditions remain very primative and have not changed much since the Spanish used African and indigenous slaves years ago. All tour operators strongly acknowledge how dangerous it is, and you hear about enough mining accidents for me to want to stay away. Instead I am going to watch a movie about the mines tonight 🙂
I’m finally caught up on my trip, sorry for the long break, but thanks for following and thanks for the comments 🙂
I’m so proud of you for making safe choices 🙂
