Cruz del Condor
The next morning we got up early to see another highlight of the Canyon – a look out where tons of Condors (a huge bird). We took the bus at 7am to a lookout that was an hour away but on the road back to Arequipa. The Condors are supposed to be best viewed between 8am and 10am as they wake up between those times and set out for the day. As soon as we got there there were a couple soaring around. I got a few pictures but then when to move to a better viewing spot and they had flown away by the time I got there. Then I found out that those may have been the only Condors we would see for the morning as other people had talked to tourists previously who came to the lookout and didn’t see a single bird! We only had an hour before the next bus would come to take us back to Arequipa. Thankfully about a half hour later we saw another Condor flying around, but that would be the only other one I saw. They are quite the bird to see in flight as they do not flap their wings much and just soar around…Google a picture or video!
I am now back in Arequipa and decided to stay another night here since I didn’t have much time here before the Canyon. I spent today doing a walking tour with a girl I met from the US and then we wandered around a bit longer just taking the city in.
I am catching an overnight bus to Cusco (the city I will be doing Machu Picchu from) later tonight. My mom arrives as well tomorrow to join me for a couple weeks and I can’t wait!!!
