Saturday
Saturday was such an awesome day! It started out by us getting up early to go to the Masai market. I had just got a picture with one the other day in town which was suuper cool! They are a large tribe of people and there are many around Tanzania. They just wear material drapped over them with belts and machetes. they have large piercings and stretched ear lobes. men and women all have shaved heads..there is still a lot of abuse towards women within these tribes including female mutilation..i dont know much about what they actually do other than they are very unique. the market we were going to was about an hour out of town. it took a while to finally get on the right bus and then for it to get going. We finally arrived at the market around 10am. The masai have very distinct colours (blue, red, purple and yellow) and it was an amazing site to see so many in one place at a time.
there was a huge section where they were selling cows and goats and donkeys and we decided to venture through it. it was a little scary with cows just roaming everywhere! We we initially a little afraid to talk to the masai from warnings we had received before, but they seemed just as interested to talk with us as we were to talk with them!!
in other sections of the market there were fully intact, but skinned goats and animals hanging from trees basking in the sun.. we stayed away from there becasue it smelled aweful. The section we wandered through was where they were selling their traditional material and beads..i ended up getting a piece of material and some beads.. as we were walking, one of the men said hello to us and we had a short conversation, but he looked different from all of the other people because he had a weave of hair and a bit of a group surroudning him.. i didnt think much of it until chelsey came over to us to explain what it meant because she had studied the masai in school.
turns out the guy was a warrior and a leader of a pack or a tribe because he had killed a lion!!!!!! and we had just talked to him!!!!! that was probably the coolest thing i have done since i have been here.. i real warrior killed a real lion with nothing but spears/knives and his hands!! wooooaaahh!!!!
after that excitement we decided to head home.. it was an interesting ride of course.. about half way home everyone got off the daladala and went onto another bus.. so of course we followed hoping it was still going back to town.. there are always stops along the road with police, but one of the times we had to pull over we were stopped for quite a long time! i have no idea what was wrong but in the end we got a new driver and continued home.. you just dont ask questions! haha
i was sitting inbetween two women with children and at one point both babies decided they were hungry.. so of course the women think nothing of whipping their boob out on the bus ride home.. that was pleasent for me….we were finally back in town and had just enough time to walk home, lay on the bed for a bit, and then we had to go back into town for the talent show.
of course the set up was slow as usual and we didnt get started until much later than we had hoped.. there was still a good turn out and some good performers. unfortunately the mosque had prayers at 7pm and it was getting dark so we had to end the talent show. after that we decided to go to oasis hotel for dinner.. best decision ever!!! The food was cheap aaand amazing!! it is a good thing we didnt discover it earlier because we would have been there every night!! we are definitely going back before we leave.. that ended the night and then it was time to go home for a good nights sleep!
